Cell skin cancer is a term that refers to different types of skin cancer that affect the cells in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). The most common types of cell skin cancer are:
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC): This type of cancer starts in the basal cells, which are the cells that line the bottom of the epidermis. It usually appears as a small, shiny, or pearly bump or a flat, scar-like lesion on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the face, ears, neck, and chest. BCC rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but it can grow deeper into the skin and damage nearby tissues if not treated1.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC): This type of cancer starts in the squamous cells, which are the cells that line the top of the epidermis. It usually appears as a firm, red, or scaly lump or a rough or crusted patch on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the face, ears, hands, and arms. SCC can sometimes spread to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes or organs, if not treated.
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC): This type of cancer starts in the Merkel cells, which are specialized cells in the epidermis that help us sense touch. It usually appears as a fast-growing, painless, or tender nodule that can be red, purple, or skin-colored on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the head, neck, arms, and legs. MCC is very rare but aggressive and can spread quickly to other parts of the body if not treated.
